Troubleshooting Garage Door Opening Problems For Homeowners

Blog

Garage door springs are one of those things in your house that you never give a second thought to until it stops working correctly. Day after day, you push the garage door opener button, the door goes up, and the door goes down, and there's never a problem.

And then suddenly, one day, the door won't go up, the door won't go back down, or the door starts making horrible noises.

While most garage door torsion spring repairs and replacements should be done by a licensed, professional garage door repair technician, homeowners should be able to perform some basic troubleshooting.

Knowing how to troubleshoot common garage door problems will help you avoid the cost of unnecessary service calls.

Use this procedure to troubleshoot your malfunctioning garage door:

Check for Garage Door Opener Problems

If your garage door doesn't want to go up or down and has a garage door opener installed, it is most likely the problem with the door opener, not the door itself.

Most garage door opener problems are simple and can be resolved by

  • ensuring the unit has power
  • changing the batteries on the remote in your vehicle
  • visually inspecting the unit to make sure the door is still on track

If the garage door opener has power, the remotes have new batteries, and everything looks fine, but the door will not go up and down, it is a safe bet that it is not the problem.

Visually Inspect the Garage Door

Once you determine the garage door opener isn't the problem, visually inspect the garage door.

This is another common failure point if you have a garage door that rolls up on a track. If one of the door panels gets just a little out of alignment, it will knock the door off the track.

Sometimes it is easy to put the door back on track by just manually moving it. Other times, you will need a professional garage door technician to fix the door.

Visually Inspect the Garage Door's Torsion Springs

If the garage door looks fine, then it's time to check the torsion springs. Torsion springs should have a uniform look without any separation between the curls of the spring. The springs should not be rusted and should be under a lot of tension.

If either of the two torsion springs is no longer under tension or looks damaged, you must call for a garage door repair. Torsion springs are under excessive tension and can seriously injure or kill you if you do not know how to work with them safely.
